DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT

Kitchen shopping doesn’t have to be like a root canal.

Tis the season again and I don’t mean the holiday season as that has just passed. I refer to the return of our Naples home owners who are here for the weather (and the shopping we hope). Typically we realize an increased interest in remodeling homes, kitchens and bathrooms at this time of year and we hope that this year will be no exception. I would like to offer some guidance as to the best way to go about your comparison shopping for a kitchen remodel.

First you should familiarize yourself with the different kitchen stores and what they have to offer as far as cabinetry styles and services. You can do this by stopping by and asking questions, going on-line for a quick peak or my favorite way which is to ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. Once this is done be sure that you choose companies that you want quotes from that are similar. For instance stopping by your favorite box store and getting a lineal foot quote is not even in the same league as working with a professional kitchen designer. So that would not be a match.

One of the most important things you can do is to check out their showroom. The condition of the displays and whether or not they are up to date is very telling. Maybe your cabinet guy doesn’t have a showroom and that should give you room for pause. How about the greeting you get when you walk in. This will immediately demonstrate attention to service or the lack of. Do you get the feeling that they want to sell you everything from soup to nuts or are they happy to specialize in your kitchen cabinetry design and then help you get everything else you need. Another qualifier would be to give them a small task and ask that they get back to you in a specific short period of time. If they commit to this and do not get back to you look elsewhere as precedence has just been set. Let common sense lead you. If you receive a price that is vastly lower than the rest please do not hire that company. If you have waited a month or more for someone to call you back please do not hire that company. If you find someone who is truly interested in you, your family and your lifestyle, someone who responds to you even better than you expect then that’s the one you should hire. Hire them even if it costs a little more than the next guy. It is a fact that nobody likes the root canal experience so why would you set yourself up for that type of experience with your kitchen remodel.
