Small Bathroom Remodels

Small bathroom remodels.

Did you know that Thomas Crapper is universally accepted as the inventor of the toilet? Are you aware that there is a brand of toilets out there called Toto? Are you getting the feeling that we are not in Kansas anymore? So here is what we are going to do. We are going to click our heels together and wish for a new bathroom. OK it’s not that easy but it’s not that difficult either.

Small bathrooms can be redecorated fairly simply. Generally we are working with a sink, faucet, cabinet, mirrors, toilet, tile and a tub. To do this cost effectively and in a timely fashion I am going to suggest a few things. First keep the tub if it is good condition. Next take a look at your tile floor. Change the floor tile now if you want but if you look at the tile around the tub you may find it is still in very good condition. Don’t change it and the savings will be significant. Don’t try to salvage the old mirror as I suggest you hang an independent mirror. Get rid of that curtain and rod at the tub. Try installing a piece of seamless glass one half the width of the tub and just taller than your shower head. Add a nice 9” radius to the top corner and you will feel like you have just doubled the size of your bathroom. This glass barrier will stop excess spray from getting out and offer you a wide open clean look. Buy yourself a Toto toilet. The designs are extensive and you will love the new comfort height and efficiency of a Toto. And then there is the soft-close lid. Once you install one of these in your home you will be banging lids everywhere you go as you will have been spoiled by this soft close feature.

You will need some pros to help you and here are some of the places a pro will do you good. Hire a licensed plumber to disconnect (and reconnect) your water lines. Do not do this yourself. One broken seal and you will be “off to see the wizard”. Look at the outlets and switches on the wall. They need to be at roughly 44” high because the new vanity will most likely be taller than your old one. If they are too low hire an electrician to move them up. You will want to smooth out the wall where the mirror was for that new wall hung mirror I suggested. While you’re at it get rid of the medicine cabinet. In secondary bathrooms the only thing it does is give your guests something to peek into when they know they shouldn’t.

The rest is up to you. You get to go shopping which is never a hardship in my home. You’ll need to buy a new vanity, countertop and how about installing an undermount sink while you’re at it. Faucet choices are out of this world and make a big statement. Add some sexy cabinet hardware and you are good to go. Have fun with this project and please respect the need for a pro when the time arrives.
