Stepping Back in Time: Featured on the Life In Naples Magazine Blog

https://lifeinnaples.net/magazinewp/2020/04/28/stepping-back-in-time

I am writing this article during some very trying times for our families, our communities, our country and our world. During this time, I find myself reflecting on days of old. I refer to the relatively innocent times that I was fortunate enough to grow up in. My reflections are the result of having plenty of time to think about what I can do to make things easier, if not better, for those that surround me in my everyday life.

When I was young in the 50’s and 60’s life was very different then it is now. We were taught values that seem hard to find in myself and others these days. Values like saying please and thank you, holding the door open for the person behind you, and being kind to an older person by helping to carry some of their burden. How about respecting the person beside you if for no other reason than he/she is a person just like you. Or, simply by treating another as you would like to be treated.

I would like to take these turbulent times and revert to the values that I was taught as a youngster and do my best to help others without asking for anything in return. I would like to simply be patient at red lights or when in long lines. I may have forgotten that by being patient I have made my life a little better and there is a chance that my behavior will affect the person next to me in a positive way as well. I realize that I can’t do any better for myself and for others then behaving in a positive, kind, and generous way.

Lastly, it is my hope that we all take a lesson and step back into a time when caring for a stranger was the status quo. I am going to re-learn to give help without being asked and on the flip side I will not be afraid to ask for help if I need it.

Be well my friends and God Bless us all today and for all the tomorrows to come.
